Chronicle of Georgia: Carved Scroll Above the Text
Carved Scroll Above the Text. Some of the oldest dated Georgian inscriptions, from the 5th century, are carved in the Bolnisi Sioni church — stone, like these pillars, chosen to make words last. Lines of carved text cover this part of the pillar, like a page from a book in stone. Ilia Chavchavadze, the 19th-century writer later canonised as a saint, gave the nation its watchwords: “Fatherland, Language, Faith”.
