Figure Holding an Inscribed Book. Shota Rustaveli wrote “The Knight in the Panther’s Skin” in the 12th century and dedicated it to Queen Tamar — the national epic every Georgian knows by heart. A relief of books, scrolls and the people who wrote them, seen up close on a pillar. Few monuments in the world combine national history and Gospel scenes on this scale — it is one of the largest sculptural ensembles in the Caucasus.
