Jvari Monastery: Church on the Rocky Crag from Below
Church on the Rocky Crag from Below. Seen from just below the summit, the church and its walls seem to grow out of the rocky crag. The Great Church of Jvari was raised between about 586 and 605 under Stepanoz I, ruler of Kartli — and it still stands largely as it was built more than 1,400 years ago. Historians count Jvari among the masterpieces of early medieval architecture — a building where engineering, proportion and landscape work as one.
