Jvari Monastery: Collapsed Section of the Fortress Wall
Collapsed Section of the Fortress Wall. A tall section of the medieval wall, its stones partly fallen into a heap, shows how thick the old defences were. In the Middle Ages the hilltop was enclosed by a stone defensive wall with towers and a gate; its weathered ruins still line the paths around the church. Ateni Sioni near Gori, built in the 7th century, follows Jvari’s plan so closely that it is often described as its copy.
