Inside the Arched Gallery. Under the heavy stone arches of the gallery, light pours in from the openings onto the worn floor. Through invasions, earthquakes and the Soviet decades the church survived with remarkably few changes, which is why scholars value it so highly. The dome rests on squinches — small arches across the corners — a technique that let the builders set a round drum over a square space.
