Lower Terrace with a View over Mtskheta. A broad lower terrace looks out over Mtskheta and the rivers, with the church crowning the rock above. Mtskheta, across the river, was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Kartli (Iberia) for many centuries before the royal seat moved to Tbilisi. Look across to Mtskheta for the tall roofs of Svetitskhoveli, the 11th-century cathedral that tradition says keeps the robe of Christ.
