Walkway to the Fortress Ruins. The paved walkway climbs gently past a grassy mound toward the first ruined walls of the medieval enclosure. In the Middle Ages the hilltop was enclosed by a stone defensive wall with towers and a gate; its weathered ruins still line the paths around the church. From this crag watchmen could follow every road along both valleys — one reason the hill was fortified for centuries.
